Welcome society is a Puducherry based NGO established by Mrs. J. Sooriya Prabhavathi. The society provides holistic development programmes for promoting child welfare, women empowerment and community development. They conduct regular workshops to train and support individuals and groups namely parents, women and youth by helping them to recognise their competence to earn a living. Mrs. Sooriya has nearly 15 years of experience working with several NGOs in the field of microcredit. She knows that lending money to the poor is not enough to empower them and help them to come out of poverty. Social and medical accompaniment is also needed to ensure that people optimise the money lend to them. For the past 2 years, she worked as a consultant and helped NGOs to implement sustainable livelihood programmes in Nilgiris and Puducherry. Her recent efforts go towards AIDS prevention and protection of child sexual abuse.

"Poor do not always have basic knowledge about cleanliness, health and fitness. This makes our mission even more difficult since we need to teach them about good practices and basic elements of life before educating. Education is at the beginning of any social or economical improvement. We work from very ground level to motivate and help people to come up in life. It is a high-level, cross-cutting initiative that requires engagement from organisations like ours. These day’s youth are motivated by technology and computers. That's nice, but I remember them that there are many other ways to get professionally qualified. I like to see them doing creative and technical stuff with their own hands. It can benefit them in creating equipments that may be used for industrialisation or better engineering."

"There are many positive ways for business to make a difference in the lives of the poor – not through philanthropy, though that is also very important, but through initiatives that, over time, will help to build new markets."
Kofi Annan, United Nations, Secretary General. (Feb 2002)
